John Grey
The Cruel Mailman

What did you do with the letter,
I ask the mailman.

Did you squeeze it up in a ball,
toss it into a dumpster?

Or did you set fire to the blessed thing?

I get other people's mail
from time to time
so maybe you just delivered it
to the wrong house.

Or did you tear it to shreds,
toss it like confetti
when you passed a wedding
on your route?

Whatever it is you did
the woman who wrote to me
deserves better than this.

Even better than me,
as she said in her last letter.
