Hipsters and Hassids

Artist Statement

My work is expressive and energetic, yet descriptive and representational. The focus is on action, experiencing the moment, and expressing the feeling without losing the point of communication. I primarily use pen or brush and ink on paper, additionally with the use of mixed media.

I am creating my Hipsters and Hassids book to present the dichotomy between these two communities that dominate Williamsburg and how they have a lot in common despite their vast differences.

The book started a thesis illustration project while attending Pratt Institute. These two groups intrigued me because I am an artist and a religious Jew and I often find myself caught between the two worlds.

Even when put into different categories, people share the same qualities that hold themselves back based on fear and peer pressure. By illustrating these things I can show visually what is felt and help present my comparison without being overly exploitative.

I want to promote a universal understanding of the power of the individual. Every person is endowed with unique gifts and their environment may not always be conducive for honing these gifts for the positive. I hope with this book to promote living a balanced lifestyle, by each person utilizing their hidden self to add to the good in the world.
