 The Burden of Graven Images

Images,  images,  images,  painted images:

painted Jesus,   with long hair,   short hair,

painted crosses,   some mere cross pieces,

some gallows,   some painted trees,   dogwood,

judases,   fruit trees;    painted Jesus or painted

angels,   hovering about the tomb,   painted Jesus feeding

millions of poor,   healing beggars,   tending dirty,

clean,  all-pure infants and children,   while he sits,

stands,   bends his heart,   his hair long,   his spirit

laughing,   his flesh brooding,   his face friending—

all painted,   all idols,   all hanging,   all suspended,

all clinking silver,   burnished gold,   sun-darkened---

all painted,   fatted gold-leafed calves,

smashed  by Moses on top the

stone fragments  of the Lord’s poetry.
